As a newly admitted student of Obafemi Awolowo University, I’ve come to realize that life on this campus is much more than just lectures, assignments, and deadlines. Tucked away in the corners of this lively institution are hidden treasures - spots, experiences, and communities that make OAU truly special.

In this article, I’ll take you through some of the gems I’ve discovered so far. From mouth-watering snacks to relaxing spots and a sense of belonging that feels like family, OAU proves to be more than just a school.

Culinary Adventures

Let’s be honest, Good food is one of life’s simplest pleasures, and at OAU, it’s everywhere. While everyone talks about the affordable canteen meals, there’s one spot that stands out: “AS E DEY HOT.”

Situated near Moremi Hall, “AS E DEY HOT” is a one stall that serves snacks so good you’ll find yourself going back for more. What makes “AS E DEY HOT” a campus favorite? It’s not just the warm and welcoming atmosphere or the owners’ cheerful smiles, it’s the menu! Just imagine biting into warm, crispy puff-puff or a sugar-glazed doughnut that melts in your mouth.

And it gets better, everything here is budget-friendly! With as little as ₦100, you can treat yourself to fresh, hot buns or puff-puff. If you’re craving something more filling, their egg rolls are available for ₦500–₦600, while doughnuts go for about ₦200–₦300. The drinks? A refreshing bottle of Zobo for ₦200 - ₦400 is perfect for hot afternoons, while chilled bottles of Coke and other soft drinks start at ₦500. Trust me, with just ₦500, you’ll leave feeling full and satisfied.

Whether you’re stopping by for a snack after a long day of classes or catching up with friends, this spot has a way of making your day better.

Beyond the Classroom

If you think OAU is all about academics, think again. Food is just the beginning of the OAU experience. This campus knows how to have fun, and there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re into sports, movies, parties, or simply relaxing in nature, OAU has it all.

For sports enthusiasts, the campus boasts state-of-the-art facilities where you can sweat it out and bond with friends. Prefer something more relaxing? The Student Union occasionally organizes game nights and movie screenings that guarantee good vibes and laughter.

And if you're the party type, there are shows and parties frequently organized on campus where you can unwind, dance, and have fun with friends.

For those who love nature, the Botanical Garden near the Faculty of Social Sciences is a must-visit. Picture this: shaded walkways, chirping birds, and the calming rustle of leaves. It’s the perfect spot to recharge after a busy week, whether you’re looking for some alone time or a quiet hangout with friends.

Another thing that truly sets OAU apart is the sense of fellowship you’ll find here. With countless student organizations, clubs, faith-based groups, and volunteer opportunities, the campus offers endless ways to connect with like-minded peers.

Whether it’s joining a debate team, volunteering, or connecting with your faith-based group, there’s always a space to feel seen and valued. OAU also celebrates diversity through cultural and tribal associations, bringing students from different backgrounds together.

OAU isn’t just about academics, it’s a campus steeped in history and culture. One of OAU’s defining features is its deep cultural roots, reflected in its iconic architecture, annual events, and cultural festivals. From the majestic Oduduwa Hall to lively performances scattered across campus, there’s no shortage of moments that remind you of OAU’s historical and cultural significance.

In just a short time, OAU has already surprised and delighted me in so many ways. From stumbling upon food gems like “AS E DEY HOT” to finding community in student organizations, it’s the little things that make this place feel like home. This campus is a vibrant, ever-surprising space where academics are just one part of the story.

So, here’s my advice to all current and future students: don’t just stick to the lecture halls, go out and explore. You could take a walk through the Botanical Gardens, treat yourself to puff-puff and drinks at “AS E DEY HOT,” or join a club that sparks your interest. There’s so much waiting to be discovered here. Who knows? You might stumble upon your own hidden gem and add it to the growing list of what makes OAU so remarkable.
