"Is the campus vibe back or nah?”
Written by Oluwatobi Mercy | 3 MINS READ
It’s already the fourth week since school resumed… and guess what? Some of us just started having real lectures. Like, actual classes. Before now, campus felt like a ghost town with only bats giving us any real company. The campus looked dry, not because there wasn’t rain, but because there weren’t so many people. Most lecture halls were empty, and the sun had more attendance than the students. It was like school resumed on paper, but forgot to tell the people inside it.
In the department of Political Science, it seems like Part 2 and Part 4 students are the ones having classes the most. As for Part 3? We’re still waiting for things to really start. Classes haven’t been very frequent, and we’re all just trying to figure out when they’ll pick up.
Last week, our Head of Department sent a message to all of us through the Department president and the executives. Let’s just say... it wasn’t cheerful. They were not happy with how few students were showing up for classes and encouraged us to resume back to school. It was a kind but firm nudge, basically saying, “Oya, it’s time, Break's over. Come back to school!”
We asked some students around campus earlier this week about what they think about the whole resumption situation, here’s what they told us:
- “Lecturers are not ready. They’re still marking exams from last semester.”
- “I’m already tired, and the real stress hasn’t even started.”
- “I can’t focus till I see my results. I’m too anxious.”
- “We don’t even know if we're really back or not. Everything just dey somehow.”
Finalists, though? They’re just happy to be almost done. It’s their last semester, and they can’t wait to wrap things up. You can see it in their faces, a mix of joy and relief. You’d think someone proposed to them, but it’s just the joy of seeing the finish line. One final year student said, "I just want to be done. Anything that’ll make me stay longer in this school, God forbid.”
Meanwhile, faculties like Technology and Arts, and students in the College of Health Sciences, seem to be having a different experience. Their classes and practicals have been going on as usual. You’ll see students in those departments already in lecture halls, busy reading, attending lab practicals and taking notes. Meanwhile, the rest of us are still waiting for things to get started.
And speaking of waiting, let’s not forget about the results from last semester. Some departments have started releasing elective results, but the core courses are taking forever.
Still, this week feels different. More students are back, and it’s starting to feel like the university we all know. The campus is waking up, stretching its arms after a long, confusing nap.
Last Friday, there was the Biyi Praise comedy show, and it was packed with students laughing and enjoying themselves. The campus that once felt like a ghost town is slowly coming alive again. You can hear laughter around SUB. You can see people rushing for classes in motion. Hostels are beginning to fill up, and lecture theatres are no longer empty.
So yes, maybe this rain semester started like a slow drizzle. But soon, the downpour will begin, of lectures, activities, events, elections, and oh, the parties.
One thing’s for sure, Great Ife is awake again.
Welcome back to campus life!
